The paper is a
comprehensive review of the role of the cytokine
Interleukin-12 (IL-12) and of other recently described
members of the family of heterodimeric cytokines in innate
resistance and adaptive immunity. IL-12 was the first
heterodimeric cytokine to be described, and it has been
shown to play a key role in regulating both innate and
adaptive immunity. IL-12 is produced early on during
infections or inflammatory responses by phagocytic cells
and dendritic cells, the most potent antigen-presenting
cells. IL-12, acting together with other pro-inflammatory
cytokines and cell-to-cell signals, induce natural killer
