The paper describes a newly developed structured diagnostic interview that was designed to be used by trained lay interviewers without clinical experience to generate valid diagnoses of mental disorders based on both the ICD-10 and the DSM-IV diagnostic systems. There is considerable interest in an interview of this sort, especially as the instrument was developed by experts who were assembled by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the instrument is being used throughout the world in the WHO World Mental Health Survey Initiative.
